Koyasan is the general name for the Buddhist monastic complex of the Shingon sect on Mt. Koya in Wakayama Pref.  It is associated with Kukai ( aka Kobo Daishi, 774-835), the founder of the Shingon sect in Japan.  It has been designated as a UN Cultural Heritage site.
